Members of Environmental Development Association visit Ghana (Africa)

Members of Environment Development Association Karlis Maulics and Gegams Hanamirjans visited Ghana on the Easter week (from 04.04.2010 to 09.04.2010). The aim of the visit was to evaluate cooperation opportunities between Latvia and Ghana, and to evaluate environment issues in Ghana.

During the visit the members of EDA met representatives of Ministry of Environment of Ghana, World Bank, UNDP, CARE, Volta River Authority and GRIDCo.

As a result of this project a project application for the programme funded by the European Commission that is aimed to save and efficiently use the water resources of Ghana. The aim of the project would be to transfer the positive experience and practice of Latvia in water management, efficient use of water resources and river management to the responsible institutions of Ghana. The water sector was a conscious choice, due to the fact that Latvia has a broad experience in water management, adaption of EU norms on water quality and environment protection, therefore, Latvia could share its experience with Ghana.

All in all, the members of EDA are satisfied with the visit and see the cooperation between Latvia and Ghana as a great opportunity and will continue to work in this direction. Ghana is rapidly growing and developing country due to large financial investments (for example, European Commission invested 55 million euros in Ghana in 2009; investment in Belarus for the same period of time amounted to only 5 million euros).
