Environment Development Agency is a part of work group of Ministry of Economics of Latvia that is developing a draft law

The country of Latvia has a developed legislation base, which has successfully served as a basis for use of renewable energy resources, production of electricity and heating in Latvia. Since Latvia is a member state of EU it is required to regularly evaluate and develop national renewable energy policy by including the efficiency of the support mechanisms. The necessity for Latvia to become freer of the dependency on the primary imported energy resources, such as gas, signifies the importance of renewable energy resources for Latvia. The Government of Latvia ordered the Ministry of Economics of Latvia to develop a law on renewable energy resources.

The Ministry of Economics of Latvia has begun its work on the draft law with an aim to promote the use of renewable energy resources in Latvia and, after the evaluation of implemented support schemes for use of renewable energy resources according to the requirements of the new Directive, has concluded that the framework of the draft law “The Renewable Energy Resources Law” has to be wider than it was previously predicted, due to the fact that discussed issues are technically complicated.

To ensure that the draft law “The Renewable Energy Resources Law” is developed in quality and would be supported by the large part of the society before the submission to the Cabinet of Ministers, it is planned to significantly involve experts of renewable energy resources associations as well as experts of other branches.

To solve the abovementioned issues and successfully develop the draft of the “The Renewable Energy Resources Law”, the Ministry of Economics has organized a high level work group that invites the experts of the renewable energy resources associations and other fields to join. The Environmental Development Agency was invited to partake in the development of the draft of the “The Renewable Energy Resources Law” as a member of the work group to provide its knowledge and experience in best solutions to protect and ensure the development of the environment of Latvia.
