SUBMARINER project round table discussion: Green Growth and the Baltic Sea Region
The discussion took place in the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia in Riga, 25 Peldu Street, on the 15th of November, 2011.
Representatives of the following authorities were involved in discussion: Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia, Latvian Biotech Association, Environmental Development Association, ScanBalt, Environment, Bioenergetics and Biotechnology Competence Centre, Life Science Cluster of Latvia, Pharma and Chemistry Competence Centre of Latvia, Ministry of Agriculture and key representatives from coastal municipalities.
Aim of the discussion was exploration of potential for a permanent Baltic Sea Region network with focus on sustainable use of Baltic marine resources linking together public authorities, industries and academia in targeted efforts.
Participants discussed major issues, existing challenges and opportunities concerning Baltic Sea marine resources development. Participants agreed that there is high importance of implementation of other programmes, cooperation competence hubs or special planning group organization with purpose to analyze the use of Baltic Sea resources as algae, reed and mud, mussel farming, blue biotechnology and other resources.
In conclusion the delegates agreed that the work that has been done previously is showing positive results, underlining benefits of natural systems. However the exchange of experience in the Baltic Sea marine resources development sector is particularly important and needed.
