CLEANSHIP project Round Table discussion: Shipping adaptation to the MARPOL Annex VI new regulations

On the 29th of December, 2011, Within Baltic Sea Region programme 2007 – 2013 Round table of the project „Clean Baltic Sea Shipping” the took place in the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia in Riga, Peldu Street 25.

The aim of the Round table was to explore an impact of new 2015 year MARPOL Annex VI, Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships on shipping in Baltic Sea Region, which is defined as Emission Control Area (ECA) and find alternative solutions linking together public authorities, industries and academia in targeted efforts.

Representatives of the following authorities were involved in discussion: Representatives from Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, Ministry of Transport, Latvian Maritime Administration, Riga Freeport Authority, Latvian Maritime Academia, as well as European Commission consultant and key representatives of the shipping lines in Latvia.

Latvian guidelines for maritime development were discussed during the meeting, as well as Latvian position and plans relating to shipping: strategic plans, key priorities, aims, activities and directions, as well as main problems and competition’s issues.

 

One of the main topics was EU support and participations in projects.

Participants discussed major issues, existing challenges and opportunities concerning Baltic Sea ports’ infrastructure development.

 

Participants agreed that there is a high importance of implementation of other programmes, cooperation competence hubs or special planning group organization with purpose to analyze the existing and necessary port’s infrastructure in Latvian ports to meet MARPOL Annex VI new requirements and reduce eutrophication and air emissions from shipping, which in port cities are recognised not only as a threat to the environment, but also to the health of citizens.
