CleanShip project news

In the middle of January 2012, within “Clean Baltic Sea Shipping” project, Environmental Development Association’s (EDA) chairman of the board Karlis Maulics and project assistant Zanna Savcuka have visited Norwegian port in Oslo (formal partner), German ports Hamburg, Kiel and Luebeck, Danish port Kalundborg (formal partner) and Danish Maritime Authority (supporting partner).

Meetings were regarded to fulfilling the task 3.2. within WP3 "Demand study port infrastructure". In this task Environment Development Association is investigating the needs for new environmentally related port infrastructure such as shore side electricity, LNG bunkering facilities and LNG terminals. Meeting with representatives from Port Authorities helped EDA to investigate how many investments will be contributed in the coming years and how much investive money would have to be raised from the ERDF main stream programmes and other financing sources.
By-turn, meeting with Danish Maritime Authority’s (DMA) Head of centre Mogens Bech was devoted to discuss DMA’s  „A feasibility study for LNG filling station infrastructure and test of recommendations”. Danish Maritime Authority has taken the initivative to the BJR flagship project within the European Union TEN-T programme Motorway of the Sea, which aims to prepare a feasibility study and set up recommendations for central stakeholder with regards to different aspects of the establishment of an LNG infrastructure. On behalf of Mogens Bech, the study is relevant to analysis of LNG soft regulations in ECAs and to the 31.01.2012 final meeting, which will be held in Copenhagen. On the final meeting recomendations of soft regulations will be prepared by project’s consultant (more information at www.dma.dk). By-turn, finalizing conference will be in May 2012.

Overall, in period from September 2011, EDA has visited all formal project partner ports: Port of Trelleborg (Lead Partner), Ports of Stockholm, Port of Helsinki, Port of Turku, Port of Tallinn, Port of Kalundborg, Klaipeda Sea Port Authority and Port of Oslo.
Moreover, EDA has visited other Baltic Sea region ports: Poland ports Gdansk, Gdynia and Szczecin – Swinoujscie; Russian port Kaliningrad, Latvian ports Riga, Ventspils and Liepaja. In general 18 ports have been visited.

One more Baltic Sea region port St.Peterburg is planned to be visited in the end of March 2012. On March 29-31 2012 within the framework of the “United Russia” Party Project “St. Petersburg – the Sea Capital of RUSSIA” the III International Forum “Ecology” will take place. It will include the official and the exhibition programmes that will be devoted to the protection and conservation of the water resources. According to analyze current and planned situation in Baltic Sea region ports, EDA is going to participate in this conference and make a speech about LNG and OPS situation in the Baltic Sea region ports. (More info about conference is available at http://global-port.ru/en/conferences/18.html)

Moreover, EDA is attending the international conference „The Environmentally Friendly Ship”, which is being held on the 28-29 February 2012 in London. The conference will focus on the following topics: Air pollution reduction, Operation in Emission Control Areas (ECA’s), Alternative Fuel: LNG, hydrogen, biofuel, Improving Ship Energy Efficiency Index, Ballast water and waste treatment & management, Minimizing the impact on marine ecosystems, "Clean” production and maintenance methods, Implementation of new and future regulations and other “green issues”. (More information at http://www.rina.org.uk/Environmentally-Friendly-Ship).
During this event, disscusion with representative from Bureau Veritas (France), Cargotec Finland and Rolls-Royce will help to fulfill the project Clean Baltic Sea Shipping task 3.2 "Demand study port infrastructure".

Cargotec Finland  has initiated a study that is looking at ways to best determine improvements in container ship utilisation, and proposes to compare potential installations of its cargo handling systems onboard containerships versus other alternative arrangements.
Bureau Veritas is going to tell about fuel consumption and air emissions’ prediction by energy flow modeling onboard ships. They will present a number of solutions for reducing fuel oil consumption and air emissions together with their advantages and disadvanteges. They will tell how nowadays is possible to obtain a fuel efficient and environmentally friendly ship. Bureau Veritas has developed a ship modeling platform to effectively simulate the different energy systems and the energy transformations shared between them.

Lloyd’s Register  will tell about property of natural gas and design principle for using natural gas as alternative fuel in marine industry.
All stipulated and received data will be processed and reported precisely in the project’s „Clean Ship” task 3.2 "Demand study port infrastructure".
