Development, opportunities in the Fisheries Sector 2015-2020

Environmental Development Association participated in the conference "Development, opportunities of the Fisheries Sector 2015-2020", organized by LR Ministry of Agriculture, “Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre” Ltd. and Latvian National Fisheries Network, which took place in Adazi Cultural and Educational Centre on November 27th.

Minister of Agriculture of LR J.Dūklavs stressed the high development potential of the industry and current situation positive direction, despite the constraints and obstacles that were mainly related to the Russian export market.

Participation in the SEED MONEY FACILITY Programme IRIS project partner meeting

Environmental Development Association participated in the first BallastRISK planning meeting in the framework of Seed Money Facility Programme project IRIS or „Improving risk assessment of invasive alien species and cost-efficiency analysis of ballast water treatment methods” at Finnish Environmental Institute SYKE on 14th April 2015 in Helsinki.

Project partners discussed further development of BallastRISK – „Managing the invasive alien species risks at the Baltic Sea: Novel tools to support the ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention” application that was submitted within the Baltic Sea Region Programme (2014-2020)– 1st step - Concept Note. BallastRISK project aims to develop a tool for the search of most cost-effective ballast water treatment methods given the characteristics of a ship. The risk assessment tool for granting exemptions in the Baltic Sea, produced by HELCOM-OSPAR, will be improved to include those species that have not yet invaded the Baltic Sea. The current Invasive alien species (IAS) risk management practices will also be evaluated.

3rd SUBMARINER Network Members’ Assembly and Workshop on macroalgae value chains

EDA participated in Submariner Members’ Assembly and Workshop on macroalgae value chains, which was organized in the premises of University of Copehagen, Taastrup, Denmark on 25th-26th February 2015.

The workshop was devoted to objective of enhancing resource-efficient and sustainable blue growth opportunities by preparing the ground for a commercial and environmentally sounds use of macroalgae (seaweed) in the Baltic Sea Region. Participants discussed possibilities of establishing macroalgae cultivation pilot sites and beach-cast harvesting activities in the BSR, assessed current status and key aspects of environmental, technological, regulatory and socioeconomic preconditions, identified commercially and environmentally best suitable macroalgae species for cultivation in the BSR, discussed industrial applications of macroalgae, technology and knowledge transfer as well as development of a new algae-based value chains.

"Funding cooperation": Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme Conference 2014

Environmental Development Association participated in Baltic Sea Region Programme (2014-2020) Conference on 26th - 27th November 2014 in Warsaw, Poland.

Conference was opened by Ms Dorota Pyc (Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Development, Poland), Ms Lena Andersson Pench (Director, Territorial Co-operation, Marco-regions and North-West Europe, DG Regional and Urban Policy, European Comission) and Mr Erk Westermann-Lammers (Chairman of the Executive Board, Investitionsbank Schleswig-Holstein, Managing Authority).
